Mode Of Action

Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that are converted by cellular cells? enzymes to active phosporylated metabolites that inhibit viral reverse transcriptase and viral DNA synthesis.

Drug Indication HIV infection in combination with other ARVs.
Precautions Hepatic impairment; patients weighing less than 40kg should not be given ABC in fixed combination with AZT and 3TC; reduce dose in cases or renal impairment.
Contra-Indications Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side Effects Serious allergic reactions (stop treatment and do not rechallenge), GI disturbances, fever, headache, fatigue, lactic acidosis.
Dosage HIV infection in combination with other antiretroviral drugs: 600mg daily in 1-2 divided doses; Child 3months-12 years, 8mg/kg (max. 300mg) twice daily or 16mg/kg (max. 600mg) once daily or Body-weight 14-21kg, 150mg twice daily or 300mg once daily; Body-weight 21-30kg, 150mg in the morning and 300mg in the evening or 450mg once daily; Body-weight over 30kg, 300mg twice daily or 600mg once daily, Child 12-18 years, 300mg twice daily or 600mg once daily.
